Harry Potter and the Faith Crisis
ScripturePlus | 02 min
Have you ever noticed that in Harry Potter 7, Harry essentially goes through a faith crisis? He’s not doubting his testimony of the church, but he absolutely goes through a period of doubt when it comes to Dumbledore.
Harry starts out with a simple and blind admiration of Dumbledore. He’s in awe of all Dumbledore does, as the wise and altruistic role model and mentor. But then when Dumbledore dies, all these rumors about his sinister past start coming out and Harry starts wondering, is any of this true?
What brought Harry peace was reconciling with Dumbledore and his faith by continuing on the path set out by Dumbledore until he was able to get the whole picture and gain greater context instead of caving to the voices of the critics.
Simplicity beyond complexity is not reverting to naivete. It’s completing the hero’s journey. It’s discovering all the facts—the good, the bad, and the ugly—and choosing to interpret that data with faith, hope, and charity instead of with cynicism and unkindness.
